Tuesday Transformation - Mikeila Carrington

Financial Analyst, Scotia Insurance (Barbados)

Who is Mikeila Carrington?

I am a Financial Analyst with a background in external audit, particularly in the areas of financial services, investments management and insurance. I’m also an ACCA-qualified accountant as well as a candidate for the CFA Level III exam. I’d describe myself as goal-oriented, adventurous and definitely a go-getter.

What is a typical day for you like?

As a financial accountant, there are specific reports to be completed on a monthly basis, so I generally have an idea of what I will be faced with each day. However, the banking environment right now is extremely dynamic and fast-paced, so I do expect ad-hoc tasks with quick turn-around times as well. On evenings, I cuddle up with my CFA texts and get to studying.

How did you remain motivated while pursuing your ACCA studies?

I always kept in mind the purpose of doing the ACCA exams. My long-term goal is to take my career to the next level, and move into a senior finance management role. ACCA provides the perfect avenue for doing that.

If we told you 5 years ago that you would be in this position today, would you have believed us?

I would’ve been happily impressed that you knew my career path. Five years ago, I recently completed a Bachelor’s Degree in Tourism Management. Funny enough, at that time I undoubtedly saw myself pursuing a career in finance as I was particularly drawn to the accounting and finance courses within the degree. And here we are!

What advice would you give someone who is interested in pursuing a career in Accounting?

It’s a rewarding but tough road filled with long hours and hard work, so I’d advise persons to ensure they take care of themselves mentally and actively strive to maintain a work-life balance. Schedule social outings in your calendar if you have to!

I also want others to know that everyone faces different challenges and circumstances so don’t measure your progress based on someone else’s yardstick. Do your absolute best and no one can fault you for that.

Everyone needs a support system. Who does yours consist of?

There have been times when I felt overwhelmed and went into a slight panic as exams drew close but I was blessed with a mother who has been such a calming and supportive influence throughout my academic and professional career. I’m also super grateful to have a family and a small circle of friends who’ve supported me every step of the way.

How do you typically spend your free time?

I quite enjoy playing badminton and staying active. Also, though my frame might not look it, I’m one to frequent the Barbadian dining scene. We have such a variety of good food to offer!
