Who is Alicia Chandler?
I am a practising Human Resources Professional with oversight in Barbados, Grenada, St. Lucia and Antigua with a Multi-National Organization. I hold a Masters in Human Resource Development and Performance Management from the University of Leicester, a Bachelors of Science in Sociology from the University of the West Indies Cave Hill Campus and I am currently pursuing the Society for Human Resource Management Senior Certified professional designation. I am currently the Vice-President of the Human Resources Management Association of Barbados and have been on the board of management of HRMAB for over three years.
When I am not being an HR Hero, I enjoy the gym Bassa Bassa. I teach violin and viola to students from age 4 through the Suzuki Music Philosophy, the mother tongue language. I am also an avid toastmaster and the President at Eastern Orators Toastmasters Club. In 2019, I was awarded the designation of Advance Communicator Bronze. I am also an active member in my community.
What does a typical day for you look like?
Every day is filled with new challenges and opportunities. Living by ‘We are what we repeatedly do, excellence then, is not an act, but a habit, I tackle each day with passion and a ‘to do attitude’
What was your first job?
My first job was working in the Probation Department as a Vacation student. It was such an amazing experience, being able to work alongside Probation officers who were making differences in the lives of individuals and society. My love for people made this quite enjoyable.
What do you consider the most rewarding aspect of working in Human Resources?
Making a difference in the lives of people and providing opportunities for them to maximize their potential.
What advice would you give someone who is interested in pursuing a career in this field? Be willing to go the extra mile; ensure that you are extremely passionate about the field and always keep abreast of new trends and changes within HR. Hard Work and a positive mindset are crucial.
What advice would you give someone currently on the job market?
Maintaining a positive attitude, good worth ethic and understanding the nuances of employment law.
As a busy professional, how do you manage to maintain a work-life balance?
Staying organized, managing my time and ensuring that I always plan at least one activity every two weeks that I enjoy, this is extremely important. I also enjoy my gym time.
